OmuZira is a social business founded in 2013 with a mission of educating and empowering women and girls in Kampala, Uganda. OmuZira means “brave” or “hero” in the local Luganda language, a fitting name for the hardworking women involved in the organization.
OmuZira’s mission is to teach local women and children useful life skills so that they may better support themselves and their families. The profits made from OmuZira bracelets go directly towards funding basic needs such as food, healthcare and education, as well as financial literacy and business planning training.
OmuZira creates socially and environmentally responsible, handcrafted jewelry from recycled paper. Old magazines and outdated calendars are torn into thin strips, rolled into a round shape and finished with a clear varnish, providing endless possibilities of colors and designs.
